Older people often say the world isn’t what it used to be. And they’re right. But the real challenge isn’t that things have changed—it’s that no one has shown them how to be part of this new world.
For Grandma Maria, that means not being able to video call her granddaughter abroad. For Grandpa Georgi, it’s standing in long lines to pay his bills because online payments feel impossible. And for Aunt Snezhana, it’s struggling to book a doctor’s appointment because everything is now done through a mobile app.
These small but significant barriers make life harder—and lonelier—for seniors. That’s where Gift an Hour, an initiative by the Znanie Association, comes in. This program pairs young volunteers with older adults, helping them master essential digital skills and navigate the challenges of the modern world.
Beyond Technology: The True Power of Gift an Hour
This initiative isn’t just about sending a photo on Viber or finding a bus route on Google Maps. It’s about connection, shared experiences, and trust. When a 25-year-old volunteer teaches an 80-year-old woman how to shop online, the conversation isn’t just technical. It’s about the world today, memories of the past, and the ways life has changed—and stayed the same.
“This isn’t just a course; it’s a space for real communication,” says Vasilena Varbanova, vice chair of the Znanie Association. “When you teach a family member, expectations and impatience get in the way. Here, it’s different—there’s a genuine willingness to help, without judgment.”

Stories That Warm the Heart
Every session at Gift an Hour leaves a mark—on both seniors and volunteers. The energy and motivation are palpable.
“We’re done with the course, but I want to keep going,” one participant says with a smile as she plans her next digital steps with a volunteer. Another chimes in: “We’re so pleased with the result!”
One volunteer, Yoana Vasileva, a software developer, joined Gift an Hour because it saddened her that people only think about doing good around the holidays. “I wanted to do something with lasting impact. I found the program through TimeHeroes and knew instantly it was for me.”
At first, she worried she wouldn’t be a good enough teacher. But after a few sessions, she realized she didn’t need to be perfect—just patient. Many older participants start off hesitant, too, but when they send their first photo or independently find a doctor’s address online, their confidence soars. This isn’t just about learning to perform tasks; it’s about feeling empowered and independent.
Some participants have big dreams—a woman in the program is learning how to digitize her book on folk medicine, while a 94-year-old man hopes to explore artificial intelligence in the next edition of the course. “Their interests are so different, but they all share the same drive—to keep learning and stay connected to the modern world,” says Vasilena.

Znanie Association: Learning for All, Opportunities for Everyone
The Znanie Association has been dedicated to lifelong learning and non-formal education for over 30 years. Beyond Gift an Hour, it has launched initiatives like Mentors Without Borders (a professional mentorship program), Business Sense for Civil Society Organizations (focused on social entrepreneurship), and various youth education programs. With the help of volunteers and partners, the organization continues to expand its mission, creating opportunities for personal and professional growth for people of all ages.
TimeHeroes & Znanie: Small Acts, Big Change
Gift an Hour has received incredible support from TimeHeroes, Bulgaria’s largest volunteer-matching platform. For over a decade, TimeHeroes has helped connect Znanie Association with eager volunteers.
“We started posting our missions on TimeHeroes when it was just a small platform. Over the years, they’ve transformed volunteering in Bulgaria—making it easier for people who want to help to connect with organizations that need support,” Vasilena explains.
When asked about the state of volunteering today, she adds, “It’s clear that volunteering is here to stay. I see it as a positive shift.”

Anyone Can Be a Volunteer!
Gift an Hour exists thanks to volunteers and donors who believe knowledge should be accessible to everyone. Your support helps seniors navigate the digital world and stay connected with their loved ones.
And getting involved is easy! Unlike firefighting or mountain rescues, you don’t need special skills—just a willingness to help and a few free hours each week.
The Znanie Association welcomes volunteers year-round. Reach out and become part of the change—because sometimes, the smallest act can transform someone’s life.
The America for Bulgaria Foundation champions volunteerism and philanthropy in Bulgaria by providing vital support to initiatives like TimeHeroes and other community projects.
